This requires 4r—dg consideration of both long-term and short-term effects on ecological, economic, and community systems. From: Lake Oswego Sustainability Plan adopted 11 /2007 City Sustainability Plan Sustainability objectives : 1 . Reduce dependence upon fossil fuels, extracted underground metals and minerals. 2 . LOSD , Allied , Clackamas Co. ) to evaluate opportunities to increase recycling rates and reduce waste going to landfills , with focus on special events, parks , ball fields , etc. A( When specifying outdoor recycling containers consider ease of use (by user and Maintenance staff) and placement Waste Reduction & Recycling 2008 Actions ✓ Install dishwashers in City facilities and provide durable dinnerware in break rooms and for City functions ✓ Hold employee events in facility that allows for use of durables Consider prohibiting City purchase of beverages in plastic bottles and food packaged in Styrofoam for meetings (draft policy has been developed . . . ) Waste Reduction & Recycling 2008 Actions Develop a formal policy requiring — deconstruction and construction debris recycling for City building projects (in practice ; bring with green building policy) Evaluate feasibility of implementing an employee recycling benefit, e . g . battery and compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) recycling Waste Reduction & Recycling 2008 Actions ✓ Continue to automate City functions , e . g . e-time , electronic paychecks , electronic billing , on-line applications , digital recording of meetings , electronic packet distribution , etc. , and look for additional opportunities Waste Reduction & Recycling Performance Measures • Overall waste generated annually Waste tonnage to landfill Materials diverted from landfill by type and weight • Paper purchased per staff FTE _ SPEN100 Waste Reduction & Recycling 2008 Accomplishments • Library media services collected and recycled close to 100 boxes of damaged , not playable , or unable to be used plastic media , such as DVDs , CDs , cassettes , & cases • Streamlined the collection and recycling of printer/copier toner cartridges , ink jet cartridges , batteries , and fluorescent light tubes from City facilities Waste Reduction & Recycling 2008 Accomplishments • Started using 100% post-consumer waste recycled content printer/copier paper for most City documents • Began participation in OfficeMax's reusable tote program for office supplies • Worked with Allied to conduct waste audits of 10 City facilities Waste Reduction & Recycling 2008 Accomplishments • Adopted Business Recycling Requirements • Participated in several community education and outreach events to promote sustainability: • Shorenstein Properties Green Fair • Community shred and recycling day • Block foam collection and recycling day • Set up recycling containers in City parks and for special events Waste Reduction & Recycling On-Going Activities • Prohibiting sale of bottled water at the Farmers' Market and providing water stations instead _ • Collecting vegetative waste for composting from the Farmers' Market and Adult Community Center Waste Reduction & Recycling Next Steps-2009 • Improve tracking efforts (internal and Allied Waste) • Implement Business Recycling Requirements • Develop waste reduction and recycling "curriculum" as part of employee sustainability training By 2012 . . .
