Waste Reduction & Recycling
2012 Targets
• For City operations , decrease overall
solid waste stream by 25% by weight
by 2012
• Meet the State adopted Portland
metro area recycling recovery rate of
64% by 2009 by increasing the City's
recycling recovery rate
Waste Reduction & Recycling
2008 Actions
✓ Collect baseline information & establish
systems to monitor what types of
materials and quantities are recycled
and landfilled to determine current
_- recovery rate and set future targets :
✓ Perform waste audits at each facility
✓ Inventory containers, collection schedules, & cost
Track what goes in compactor & to Maintenance
and where it comes from
✓ Collect data on recycling not collected by hauler
Waste Reduction & Recycling
2008 Actions
✓ Keep staff informed of recycling best
management practices
Set up system for sharing information
about availability of used office furnishings
_- and equipment for reuse at the City
Identify and fund position to oversee City

`"" sr Consider staff training through Master
Recycler Program
Waste Reduction & Recycling
2008 Actions
A( Work with partners (e .g . LOSD , Allied ,
Clackamas Co. ) to evaluate
opportunities to increase recycling rates
and reduce waste going to landfills , with
focus on special events, parks , ball

A( When specifying outdoor recycling
containers consider ease of use (by
user and Maintenance staff) and
placement

Develop a formal policy requiring
— deconstruction and construction
debris recycling for City building
projects (in practice ; bring with green
building policy)
Evaluate feasibility of implementing
an employee recycling benefit, e . g .
battery and compact fluorescent light
bulb (CFL) recycling
Waste Reduction & Recycling
2008 Actions
✓ Continue to automate City functions ,
e . g . e-time , electronic paychecks ,
electronic billing , on-line applications ,
digital recording of meetings ,
electronic packet distribution , etc. ,
and look for additional opportunities
Waste Reduction & Recycling
