HomeMy WebLinkAboutApproved Minutes - 2012-09-17     CITY OF LAKE OSWEGO  Sustainability Advisory Board Minutes    September 17, 2012    Call to Order / Roll Call    Co‐Chair Lisa Adatto called the September 17, 2012 meeting of the Sustainability Advisory  Board (SAB) to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Main Fire Station, 300 B  Avenue, Lake Oswego, Oregon.    Members present: Co‐Chair Lisa Adatto, Co‐Chair Gregory Monahan, Andre DeBar,  Jason Duhl, and Mick Mortlock, Ian Goldsmith (alternate),  Mary Ratcliff (alternate) Members excused: Sarah Asby, Vidya Kale, E. Jay Murphy, Suzanne Spencer Council Liaison: Councilor Mike Kehoe (absent) Guest(s): Duke Castle Staff / Consultants: Susan Millhauser, Sustainability Coordinator; Jordan Wheeler,  Assistant to the City Manager   Announcements from Board and Staff    Ms. Millhauser mentioned there was a Drug Take Back event scheduled for November 29, 2012.  Mr. Monahan stated that the City Council would be reviewing a presentation on September 25,  2012 regarding the Luscher Farm Area Property.     Approval of Minutes    None available to review.    Review City Council Draft Upcoming Meetings Schedule    Ms. Millhauser reviewed the schedule of upcoming Council meeting topics with the Board. Mr.  Wheeler gave a brief update on the City Council study session regarding the solid waste  franchise.    Public Comment – None.    Regular Business    Co‐chair Adatto went over the agenda.    Strategic Planning Introduction and Overview  City of Lake Oswego Sustainability Advisory Board Minutes  September 17, 2012  Page 2 of 2   Co‐Chair Adatto stated that this meeting would be devoted to Strategic Planning.    Strategic Planning – Part 1    Mr. Castle, the consultant, stated that the first step is to determine what brought the Board  members to Lake Oswego and what it is about sustainability that they are passionate about.   There will be a second session on October 1, and in that session they will come back with an  activity they are interested in and present it to the group.  The Board will come up with a  tentative list and at the third session on October 15, they will develop a final version of projects  they are interested in pursuing.  They will then need to decide what items they think the Board  can take on in the next year.      He asked everyone at the meeting to give a short personal story stating where they grew up,  what brought them to Lake Oswego, what it is about sustainability that they are passionate  about, and to state something that no one knows about them.  The Board members and staff  went around the room and responded to the questions he asked.    The next exercise Mr. Castle asked the Board to do was pretend the year was 2030 and they  were being interviewed about what Lake Oswego looks like at this time.  They were to  remember being on the Sustainability Advisory Board almost 20 years before and then describe  the journey to a reporter answering what it is that they particularly like about Lake Oswego in  2030; what are one or two things that make Lake Oswego more sustainable in 2030; what are  some of the challenges they and their successors had to overcome to get here; and what they  would tell their grandchildren was the most satisfying item that the SAB accomplished over the  years.  Mr. Castle said that Ms. Millhauser would write down the key elements of the stories so  they can go back and decide which items they feel are most important to work on.  The  members went around the room and responded to these questions.    Mr. Castle then reviewed the Board’s homework assignment for next meeting – to prepare a  suggested activity to move forward from today.  He asked each member to come back to the  group with at least one activity and to give a brief description of the desired outcome; the  timeline for accomplishing this; what potential resources are available; and determine which  Board member should lead work on the activity.    Adjournment    A special meeting is scheduled for October 1, 2012, with the regular meeting scheduled for  October 15, 2012.  There being no other business Co‐chair Adatto adjourned the meeting at  approximately 8:34 p.m.  Respectfully submitted,    Susan Millhauser  Sustainability Coordinator
