HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuly 2023 Parks and Rec MonthJuly is National Park & Recreation Month!
Here in the City of Lake Oswego, Mayor Joe Buck has officially proclaimed that we celebrate the vital role parks and recreation
plays in bringing people together, providing essential services, and fostering the growth of our communities. This month, we
encourage the community to visit our parks – with over 640 acres of parks and natural areas and 30 acres of recreation facilities
(with more coming in the future), there is something for every age and ability. To see the full proclamation, visit our website at
www.lakeoswego.city/parksrec.
Lake Oswego will celebrate the month with the theme adapted from National Recreation and Park Association, “Where
Community Grows.” Parks & Recreation serves as a community wellness hub, connecting people to programs and services that
advance health equity, improve health outcomes and enhance the quality of life. Plus, local parks foster environmental resilience.
Let’s peek at some of the amazing things happening in our community this month!
Sports, Culture & Recreation
has offerings for every age and ability. The swim park
is open from July through August. There are cornhole,
soccer, and lacrosse leagues. Plus, there are programs
for adults and kids to learn to cook, play an instrument,
get creative with watercolor and drawing, or learn a new
language. And, if you like to get on the water, there are
programs to learn to kayak, paddleboard, and canoe. For
our teens, we have rafting trips and camps. And for
adults, don’t miss out on the "Fitness in the Park" series.
Take your recreation outside or find classes that fit your
schedule and wellness plan.
Adult Community Center
is open Monday through Friday with classes and programs
from health and mobility, to arts and culture, to taking
day trips to fun places for hiking, jet boating, dining, and
shopping. Check out the website and our Activities Guide
for the latest offerings. Plus, there are social groups to
expand your connections in the community.
Parks Stewardship
in our annual “Can YOU find the Gnomes?” program that
goes from now through October. Each month the cute
little gnomes hide in different parks. Have fun and go out
and explore. Find the gnome, take a photo, and post it on
social media with the hashtag, #LOParksgnomes. Each
post is an entry to win a gnome in October! Plus, check
out other great programs happening in our parks and
natural areas, fostering the love of nature, Bee City
projects, and more.

Parks & Recreation Project Updates
includes the 2019 bond project, the Lake Oswego Recreation & Aquatic
Center (LORAC). The footings and deep trenching are underway.
Excavation of the pools will begin this month and the footprint of the
building is outlined with the sub-grade prep and footing trenching.
The renovation of the Annex (formerly the golf clubhouse) is also
progressing. The building’s plumbing, electrical, and fire alarm
systems were upgraded, along with new siding, windows, doors, an ADA-
accessible restroom layout, and new flooring and paint. Once
the LORAC opens, the Annex will be used for programming and small
events.
The golf course is taking shape with Dan Hixon, golf architect and
designer. His work style is to create each hole on-site considering the
slope, pin placements, bunkers, natural areas, fairways, and existing
hazards like trees and water. The outline of the fairways and greens are
now visible, and the irrigation is under construction. Final grading will be
followed by seeding in the fall.
The competition date for the LORAC, Annex, and golf course is fall 2024.
The Department is pursuing a phased development approach for Rassekh
Park. Construction bids for Phase 1 of Rassekh were opened in early June
and will be considered by City Council as this publication goes out. This
first development phase will include the skatepark, public restrooms, a
new access road, and a portion of the parking lot. In addition, Phase 1 will
set the stage for future development by constructing the public right-of-
way improvements and the backbone for the utilities required to support
the full build-out of the park. Stay tuned for more information on the
timing for Phase I development. In addition, Parks & Recreation continues
work on a funding plan for building Phase II.Events
continue to be favorite activities for residents and visitors. There are over
60 events produced annually that include everything from the Lake Oswego
Farmers’ Market to the 4th of July Parade and Celebration to Concerts and
Cultural events, and so much more. See the other side for what’s happening
