HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 2023 Monthly Reports by Department August 2023 Monthly Reports by Department Adult Services In August, Adult Services librarians wrapped up our Adult Summer Library Challenge program, conducted several outreach events, and hosted a slew of interesting events at the library. Here’s a look back at our work last month:  We are proud to report that our adult patrons broke records for the number of Summer Library Challenge sign-ups and finishers this year! 601 adults signed up for the SLC this year (previous record was 498 in 2022), and 321 of these earned points by logging the time they spent reading this summer and/or by participating in our library scavenger hunt (previous record was 273 in 2019)! Many thanks to Librarians Alicia Yokoyama and Shannon Sedell for revamping the program to appeal to more adults, to Librarian Carissa Barrett for managing the SLC website, to Librarians Todd Feinman and April Younglove for planning and hosting SLC-themed events, and of course to the Friends of the Library for funding the program! These are the SLC events we hosted in August: o A popular Find Your Voice Memoir Workshop taught by local author Carolyn Wood. o A Stencil a Statement Tote Craft Night, in which participants followed along with Creativebug videos to stencil a favorite quotation and customize a tote bag with embellishments. o The Adult Summer Library Challenge Book Group, where participants shared about the books they’ve read this summer and celebrated reading.  Together with Youth Services and Circulation staff, we served 102 patrons at Rover visits to Lakeridge Middle School and Westlake Park.  Staffed a booth at the Community Repair Fair at the LO United Methodist Church where we promoted our Library of Things collection, Seed Library, and books on sustainability.  Visited Oswego Place and The Stafford senior living facilities to present on library services available to seniors.  Featured book displays on rock climbing and rock and pop star memoirs.  Showcased beautiful pastel landscape art by Karen Shawcross in our stairwell gallery.  Posted new stories and poems to Story Line each week.  Offered the following events: o First Tuesday Music concert featuring the McAllister Keller Duo o A Genealogy Interest Group meeting at the ACC and online. o A Bookish Affair met to discuss The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles. o Building Bridges met in-person and virtually to discuss Independence by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. o Our monthly Poetry Group meeting. o Our popular monthly Trivia Night. o A Social Emotional Arts Workshop with Valerie Ilustre in which participants learned how incorporating art expression in daily life can improve their wellbeing. o Welcome to LOPL for the Ukrainian Community with Librarian April Younglove in which community members from Ukraine learned about services and resources available to them at the library. This event was offered in English with Ukrainian translation. We continued to register Summer Library Challengers, and give books away, provide storytime, craft opportunities, LEGO club, recommend great books for great readers, and interact with the 544 kids who searched for and found Waldo. Youth Services staff participated in committee work, and supported the Library’s continuing Vision and engagement campaign with social media posts, Rover outings, and more. Even though it wasn’t quite over, we celebrated the “End of Summer” with a performance from Red Yarn, and also hosted “Not your average Joe Mishkin” who is a whiz at balloon figures. Facing a forecast of 105 for that day, we moved the celebration indoors, and got to test out our theory that have a kids’ performance on the main floor of the building would work well. It did. Everyone fit, and they enjoyed themselves and were very thankful for the event. Programming: Camp LOPL: Oregon Rocks, presented by the Museum of Natural and Cultural History And Camp LOPL: Field Day It has been so evident this summer that families from around the region still crave the opportunity for engaging with other families, for free, in a way that encourages learning, exploration, and having fun. The library’s events in Rossman Park this summer have hosted library regulars, families from neighboring cities, grandparents from Portland. We’ve had great support from our teen volunteers and the Parks and Rec. department. Here’s a behind the scene shot of how the Storywalk assembly happens. Our Sixth StoryWalk, Run Wild by David Covell, has been installed in West Waluga Park to the delight of many families. comments from the guest book include: “I Love your book, the words are great and the graphics are awesome. Cute story about exploring the natural nature in your own backyard.” – Pamela (66) “So much fun! Thank you for the morning storytime!” – Eliza and her mom visiting from Eugene “Great idea! Makes everyone smile! Thank you. – Rihaan and Dara Many Teen Advisory Board members have been volunteering at our Summer Library Challenge tale this month, and have offered great feedback on anticipated programming for the coming year. The TAB leadership has been meeting with facilitators for the other city youth volunteer groups working toward the goal of presenting a consolidated path for young volunteers to see what opportunities are available throughout the city. Their new website looks great, and will hopefully increase participation on all of the different advisory councils and boards. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: This month’s Global Stories Project Read-aloud featured Gleimy reading in Spanish. She is Venezuelan and a full-time mother who loves doing different activities with her one-year-old daughter Eva. They especially love reading which they enjoy often before going to sleep. They are also avid fans of storytime at the library. Our attendees enjoyed making paper Macaws after listening to the stories.
