Proclamation
°REGG� Disability Pride Month - July 2025
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month is observed every July to honor the history,
achievements, experiences, and struggles of people with disabilities and to
commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26,
1990; and
WHEREAS, more than 1 in 4 adults in the United States, representing over 70
million people, live with a disability; and
WHEREAS, disability is a natural and valuable part of human diversity—not a
deficit or a condition to be fixed; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 theme for Disability Pride Month— "We Belong Here, and
We're Here to Stay"—asserts the rightful place of people with disabilities in every
aspect of our communities, pushing back against ableism, exclusion, and injustice;
and
WHEREAS, despite progress, people with disabilities continue to face systemic
barriers in education, employment, health care, public access, and civic life,
making it essential to affirm their rights, voices, and dignity; and
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month serves as a vital reminder that people with
disabilities should be accepted and included exactly as they are, without
conditions, and that our communities are stronger when everyone is welcomed,
valued, and empowered;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Lake Oswego City Council,
proclaim July, 2025 as Disability Pride Month and call upon the people of the City
of Lake Oswego to join their fellow community members across the United States
in recognizing the contributions of people with disabilities, confronting ableism in
all its forms, and advancing equity and inclusion so that all may live with pride,
purpose, and dignity.
