Heritage Tree Preservation Grant Application
Heritage Trees
The City of Lake Oswego’s Heritage Tree Program fosters appreciation and increases awareness about
the contribution of trees to the City’s history and heritage by recognizing and designating individual
trees or groves of landmark importance, educating the public about the value and history of these trees,
promoting appreciation of these trees, and retaining and protecting these trees as part of the City’s
heritage. Since the Program was established in 1997, 40 trees and groups of trees have been designated
Heritage Trees across the City, including 26 trees located on private properties and 14 trees located on
public properties including public rights of way and City‐owned parks. To support the long‐term
preservation of designated Heritage Trees, the City is offering grants to assist Heritage Tree property
owners with costs of tree care and maintenance services performed by qualified tree service companies.
Grant Eligibility
Property owners of designated Lake Oswego Heritage Trees are eligible to apply for a tree preservation
grant at any time. The application form must be signed and submitted by the property owner where the
tree is physically located. The City, at its sole discretion, will determine if the application is suitable for
funding and may reimburse property owners up to 50% of the tree care costs associated with each
application. The City reserves the right to solicit proposals from alternative tree service companies and
grant agreements shall dictate the approved vendor, tasks, reimbursable amount, and timelines to
complete the approved tasks.
Use of Funds
Heritage Tree preservation grant funding shall be used to diagnose, treat, manage and care for the long‐
term viability of designated Heritage Trees. Examples of tree care services that may be eligible for
funding include: insect and disease diagnosis and treatments; Advanced Tree Risk Assessment, such as
aerial inspections, resistance‐recording drilling or sonic tomography to assess internal defects, and root‐
crown excavation; soil testing and root invigoration treatments; and, storm damage assessments and
safety pruning.
How to Apply
Preference will be given to proposals that demonstrate the need for diagnosis and treatment, are cost
effective, and feasible. Applicants must complete the enclosed form and obtain at least one detailed
proposal from a qualified tree care specialist that is licensed, bonded, insured, and managed by an
International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist, who is also Tree Risk Assessment Qualified.
